After a car accident, usually the first and most immediate need is to repair your vehicle. In today's society, a damaged or undrivable vehicle can have serious financial consequences, not to mention the extreme inconvenience.

You may already have first-hand experience how difficult it is to try to agree on a fair value for your property with the insurance company. A regulator is not your friendly insurance agent. She and the regulator have conflicting goals: They want a full and fair recovery and they want to pay you as little as possible.

Follow these steps efficiently and effectively with your property:

1. Set up your insurance claim. Contact your own insurance immediately. If you have collision coverage, leave them with the property for you. You will pay from its own pocket for the deductible, but at least your car will be fixed in the shortest time possible. Your insurance in order to deduct from the party at fault, so you ultimately have to be repaid.

If you do not have collision coverage (Make sure you have them for your future insurance), with the AT-fault party insurance (see replacement of the driver or the police for information). Notify them in writing if necessary. You must constantly remind them to follow through and inspect the vehicle.

2. Document the damage. Take pictures. Look for hidden damage under the vehicle. Video of the damage. Do you have an independent expert to view the vehicle (let your attorney to find someone).

3. Cooperation with the regulator (s). Do not talk to the regulator for the party at fault, how the accident happened, unless you have your attorney present (if you have one). However, so that they come from and inspect the vehicle as soon as possible. Cooperation with the two insurance companies is critical or you risk the chance of losing coverage. Do you have your attorney present at any time someone asks you to describe the accident.

4. Question of assessment. Drive or tow your car to another shop (or two) to have the damage assessed. Rarely are two identical assessments.

5. If your car is a whole, know what your car is worth. You are entitled to compensation for "market value" of your car. Insurance companies are very demanding in determining the lowest possible value for your car. Contact several car dealerships and want ads for cars like yours, to determine whether the values that they are correct.

6. Do not forget, taxes, license and registration. If your car was a total, you are also entitled to a refund of sales tax, registration, and license fees.

7. Remember, the rental car. In many cases, a lawyer can help you make a vehicle (based on a lien) during the time your claim will be evaluated and your vehicle inspected. It is very important to use rental cars to a bare minimum, your recovery.
