The days of the legal generalist is over. There are still lawyers, for you to do any kind of work that made its way, the complexity of the legal system and the complicated lives we lead almost all require that potential customers for the shopping - a lawyer looking for someone who specializes in the type of legal issue.
Lawyers can of corporate and real estate lawyers who specialize in the field of social security claims, workers' compensation appeals, labor disputes, law and personal injury. Each specialty requires an understanding of state and sometimes federal laws and regulations that determine how any disputes will be decided.
How do you know which lawyer to hire? First you need to understand what issue or issues you face. Some are easy to define, if you are on Social Security disability insurance and been denied, for example, you need a lawyer who deals with

When set to a lawyer, you need to ask lots of questions, for example:
Is this case are a specialty of you?
How many cases have you worked on this issue?
How often have you before the court on this issue?
How many claims did you court?
How many times have you won a case like this?
What chance did I win my case?
What kind of financial or other type of settlement can I expect?
What does it cost me to defend this case? Make sure you understand the fees and other costs, such as court filings, photocopying and telephone, and the many other expenses which add up quickly.
Make sure that someone with a track record for your particular type of case, and someone with a commitment to your interests. If you get the idea that your case is short, go elsewhere.
Criminal law is another specialty, and one with potentially high stakes. Your freedom and, sometimes, life can be at stake, so if you are a criminal proceedings of any kind, hire a criminal lawyer.
